Intercession of the Holy Souls of Purgatory

Practices and Devotions

Remembering the Holy Souls all Year Long
Mark the seasons with devotions for the Holy Souls in Purgatory.
by Susan Tassone

The souls in purgatory are silent voices that beg and implore our help. They suffer day and night 24/7, 365 days a year, without any relief. They are forever crying out to the living, “Have mercy on us, for we are lonely and poor.”

We urgently need “Apostles of Purgatory” or, if you will, “Purgatory Busters” to speak of them, pray for them, and plead their cause. Be their liberators! We have a unique opportunity to be their voices and echo their cries. If we could see the power of our sacrifices and the Masses offered for the Holy Souls, we would devote ourselves with such earnestness that the whole world would raise their eyes and take notice and would believe.

What have we learned from the saints? We know there is a profound communion between the living and the dead. We know there are no borders between us and those who have gone before us. We know the power and great efficacy of our intercessory prayers. We know the path. Are we ready to begin the journey?

The saints’ journeys are tied together to assist us with a devotion full of fervor and zeal for the Holy Souls in Purgatory — a fervor to be passed on to all future generations, to fulfill our duty as Christians, to honor the memory of the dead, to offer prayers and suffrages for them, and to become holy as the saints are holy.

Special devotional prayers and practices for the various seasons of the year will give you the opportunity to imitate the saints and the charity of God. Reflecting on the deceased every day as a perpetual remembrance brings relief for those beloved souls in purgatory. The fruit of purgatory is purification. The remembrance of purgatorial souls will spur us to avoid sin at all costs; and we will bring glory to God, for heaven will be opened to a multitude of souls.

So it is from us alone that the Holy Souls in Purgatory expect relief, help, and the termination of their sufferings. We are their only resource. We alone are their deliverers, for we alone can suffer with merit and release them. Heaven encourages them; we deliver them.

Our purgatory mission has just begun. The great Pope John Paul II emphasized that the laity will be “missionaries” because contemporary man hears witnesses more easily than teachers. He exclaimed, “You will be able to set the world on fire! The hour of the laity has struck!”(Nov. 26, 2000, Jubilee of the Apostolate of the Laity).

Choose a number of prayers and devotions, Time is of the essence. Use them.

Winter devotions and practices

  • Mark your calendar throughout the year for special dates as a reminder to pray for your dearly departed loved ones.
  • Offer Masses year-round for living and deceased family members and friends.
  • Create a family tree and offer Gregorian Masses (30 Masses for a departed soul) for your parents, grandparents, etc., to the fourth generation. This is very potent and brings many graces.
  • Pray for 15 minutes before and after Mass in thanksgiving to Jesus and for all your ancestors who have gone before you. We would not be here if it were not for the sacrifices they made for us.
  • Fast on Fridays in honor of our Lord’s Passion. Implement different kinds of fasting such as “fasting” from gossiping, giving in to idle curiosity, complaining, criticizing, watching TV, drinking alcohol, smoking, or other activities that give one pleasure.

Spring devotions and practices

  • Offer the gift of your indulgence for the Holy Souls at Divine Mercy Sunday (Second Sunday of Easter). Become a “Divine Mercy Apostle” by distributing prayercards and literature inviting all to take advantage of the extraordinary Divine Mercy graces.
  • Pray The Divine Mercy Novena (especially the one beginning on Good Friday) and the Chaplet of Mercy daily.
  • At weddings, include your deceased loved ones at the petitions of the Mass.
  • Plant a “prayer garden” in your yard in remembrance of the Holy Souls.
  • Recite Psalm 130, the official prayer of the Church for the Holy Souls.
  • When praying the Rosary in May, add an extra decade for the Holy Souls. (Saint Bernadette encouraged this style of Rosary!)

Summer devotions and practices

  • Go on your own “purgatory pilgrimage” by visiting local parishes and designated shrines within your diocese. At each, pray for the Holy Souls.
  • Take a “prayer stroll” through your local cemetery to pray for all those buried there. Bring holy water to sprinkle on the graves. (It is one of the first sacramentals of the Church. Holy Water refreshes the Holy Souls.)
  • Visit the graves of your loved ones and clean sites in a spirit of prayer and penance.
  • Pray the Eternal Rest Prayer on your rosary beads. (Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.)
  • Pray the Seven Penitential Psalms (seven psalms that express sorrow for one’s sins: 6, 32, 38, 51, 102, 130, and 143).

Fall devotions and practices

    • An indulgence is granted the Christian faithful who devoutly visit a cemetery and pray, even if only mentally, for the dead. This indulgence is applicable only to the souls in purgatory. This indulgence is a plenary one from Nov. 1 through Nov. 8 and can be gained on each one of these days.
    • Double up on prayers and sacrifices for departed loved ones and friends during this powerful season of the dead (the November remembrance).
    • Visit cemeteries with your children. Teach youth to pray the Eternal Rest Prayer. Again, sprinkle holy water on the graves in the cemetery.
    • Light blessed candles. The burning of a candle is a sign of our prayer, a bright, silent intercessor for the Holy Souls.

Introduction to the Devotion

The purpose of the Devotion of the Seven Sorrows is to promote union with the sufferings of Christ through union with the special suffering that Our Lady endured because she was the Mother of God. By uniting ourselves with both the Passion of Christ and His holy Mother, we enter into Jesus’ Heart and honor Him greatly; He is more honored because we have so honored His Mother.
The Seven Dolors are taken from Scripture events and the devotion has a long history, although it was not officially promulgated by the Church until the early nineteenth century. Before Pope Pius VII’s formal approval, the Servite Order had permission in 1668 to celebrate the Feast of the Seven Dolors because the Order was instrumental in popularizing the Seven Sorrows Devotion.
In the Middle Ages, Catholic theology concentrated mostly on Christ’s Passion; at the side of the Man of Sorrows, however, the faithful always contemplated the Queen of Martyrs. Devotion to the Crucified Christ and to Our Lady of sorrows grew side by side. On Calvary there were in a sense two altars, one in the Body of Jesus, and the other in the Immaculate Heart. Christ immolated His flesh, Mary, her heart, her own soul. On September 15, the day following the ancient feast of the Holy Cross, the Church commemorates the compassion of Mary; but it is fitting during the year, especially during Lent, to honor the Sorrows of Mary.
Mary is not mentioned in the Gospel accounts of Christ’s Transfiguration, His entry into Jerusalem, but she is recorded as being present at Calvary. She understood what the Will of God was and was faithful, co-operating with her Son as Co-redemptrix. She had prepared the victim for sacrifice and now she offered Him on the altar of Calvary.
The Gospel, John 19:25, says: “Near the Cross of Jesus stood His mother, his mother’s sister, Mary, the wife of Cleopas, and Mary Magdalene.” At Christ’s bequest, Mary was proclaimed the universal Mother of mankind from the Cross.
Mary had three loves in her Immaculate Heart: God, her Son, and souls. She so loved the world that she gave her only Son. As St. Bernard said, “The sword would not have reached Jesus if it had not pierced Mary’s heart.” Mary loved souls and on Calvary, after suffering such cruel torments she merited being the mother of all mankind.
Mary is the Apostle because she is Co-redemptrix: Behold Mary on Calvary, she suffers and prays; she stands, as one offering sacrifice.
St. Ambrose said, “I read that she stood, but I do not read that she wept.” When Mary gave us her Son, she gave us everything. Therefore it can very well be said: “Behold this heart which has so greatly loved all people that it has spared nothing for them.”

The Seven Graces of this Devotion
1. I will grant peace to their families.
2.They will be enlightened about the Divine mysteries.
3. I will console them in their pains and I will accompany them in their work.
4. I will give them as much as they ask for as long as it does not oppose the adorable will of my Divine Son or the sanctification of their souls.
5. I will defend them in their spiritual battles with the infernal enemy and I will protect them at every instant of their lives.
6. I will visibly help them at the moment of their death, they will see the face of their Mother.
7. I have obtained this Grace from my Divine Son, that those who propagate this devotion to my tears and dolors, will be taken directly from this earthly life to eternal happiness since all their sins will be forgiven and my Son and I will be their eternal consolation and joy.

Benefits of the Devotion to the Mother of Sorrows
1. To realize the value of a soul, worth the supreme Sacrifice on Calvary.
2. To work for souls, by evangelization, duty to life’s duties, and
prayer for sinners.
3. To pray always, in a life of union with God; whoever has a heart similar to Jesus’ and Mary’s hearts, will work for the salvation of souls.

When we commit sin we bring sorrow to Our Lady, for she is, indeed
our very Mother, our spiritual Mother, and she watches over
us as she watched over her Baby, nearly two thousand years ago.

It is the desire of Jesus that we should think of His Passion, to offer Him
our devotion and to renew our sorrow for sin. It is also His desire,
as the Church makes clear to us, that we should think of the
compassion of Mary in His Passion.

O Guardian of Virgins and holy Father St. Joseph, into whose faithful keeping were entrusted Christ Jesus, Innocence itself, and Mary, Virgin of virgins, I pray and beseech thee by these dear pledges, Jesus and Mary, that, being preserved from all uncleanness, I may with spotless mind, pure heart and chaste body ever serve Jesus and Mary most chastely all the days of my life.

Our Lord Said:

'The soul who during life has honored and studied the Wounds of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and has offered them to the Eternal Father for the souls in Purgatory, will be accompanied at the moment of death by the Holy Virgin and the angels; and Our Lord on the Cross all brilliant in glory will receive her and crown her.'

Blessed Souls, I have prayed for thee; I entreat thee, who are so dear to God, and who are secure of never losing Him, to pray for me a miserable sinner, who is in danger of being damned, and of losing God forever. Amen

Day 1
Jesus, my Savior I have so often deserved to be cast into hell how great would be my suffering if I were now cast away and obliged to think that I myself had caused my damnation. I thank Thee for the patience with which Thou hast endured me. My God, I love Thee above all things and I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee because Thou art infinite goodness. I will rather die than offend Thee again. Grant me the grace of perseverance. Have pity on me and at the same time on those blessed souls suffering in Purgatory. Mary, Mother of God, come to their assistance with thy powerful intercession.
Say one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and the Prayer to Our Suffering Savior for the Holy Souls in Purgatory .
Day 2
Woe to me, unhappy being, so many years have I already spent on earth and have earned naught but hell! I give Thee thanks, O Lord, for granting me time even now to atone for my sins. My good God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee. Send me Thy assistance, that I may apply the time yet remaining to me for Thy love and service; have compassion on me, and, at the same time, on the holy souls suffering in Purgatory. O Mary, Mother of God, come to their assistance with thy powerful intercession.
Say one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and the Prayer to Our Suffering Savior for the Holy Souls in Purgatory .
Day 3
My God! because Thou art infinite goodness, I love Thee above all things, and repent with my whole heart of my offenses against Thee. Grant me the grace of holy perseverance. Have compassion on me, and, at the same, on the holy souls suffering in Purgatory. And thou, Mary, Mother of God, come to their assistance with thy powerful intercession.
Say one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and the Prayer to Our Suffering Savior for the Holy Souls in Purgatory .
Day 4
My God! because Thou art infinite goodness, I am sorry with my whole heart for having offended Thee. I promise to die rather than ever offend Thee more. Give me holy perseverance; have pity on me, and have pity on those holy souls that burn in the cleansing fire and love Thee with all their hearts. O Mary, Mother of God, assist them by thy powerful prayers.
Say one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and the Prayer to Our Suffering Savior for the Holy Souls in Purgatory .
Day 5
Woe to me, unhappy being, if Thou, O Lord, hadst cast me into hell; for from that dungeon of eternal pain there is no deliverance. I love Thee above all things, O infinite God and I am sincerely sorry for having offended Thee again. Grant me the grace of holy perseverance. Have compassion on me, and, at the same time, on the holy souls suffering in Purgatory. O Mary, Mother of God, come to their assistance with thy powerful intercession.
Say one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and the Prayer to Our Suffering Savior for the Holy Souls in Purgatory .
Day 6
My Divine Redeemer, Thou didst die for me on the Cross, and hast so often united Thyself with me in Holy Communion, and I have repaid Thee only with ingratitude. Now, however, I love Thee above all things, O supreme God; and I am more grieved at my offences against Thee than at any other evil. I will rather die than offend Thee again. Grant me the grace of holy perseverance. Have compassion on me, and, at the same time, on the holy souls suffering in Purgatory. Mary, Mother of God, come to their aid with thy powerful intercession.
Say one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and the Prayer to Our Suffering Savior for the Holy Souls in Purgatory .
Day 7
God, Father of Mercy, satisfy this their ardent desire! Send them Thy holy Angel to announce to them that Thou, their Father, are now reconciled with them through the suffering and death of Jesus, and that the moment of their deliverance has arrived.
Say one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and the Prayer to Our Suffering Savior for the Holy Souls in Purgatory .
Day 8
Oh my God! I also am one of these ungrateful beings, having received so much grace, and yet despised Thy love and deserved to be cast by Thee into hell. But Thy infinite goodness has spared me until now. Therefore, I now love Thee above all things, and I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee. I will rather die than ever offend Thee. Grant me the grace of holy perseverance. Have compassion on me and, at the same time, on the holy souls suffering in Purgatory. Mary, Mother of God, come to their aid with thy powerful intercession.
Say one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and the Prayer to Our Suffering Savior for the Holy Souls in Purgatory .
Day 9
My God! How was it possible that I, for so many years, have borne tranquilly the separation from Thee and Thy holy grace! O infinite Goodness, how long-suffering hast Thou shown Thyself to me! Henceforth, I shall love Thee above all things. I am deeply sorry for having offended Thee; I promise rather to die than to again offend Thee. Grant me the grace of holy perseverance, and do not permit that I should ever again fall into sin. Have compassion on the holy souls in Purgatory. I pray Thee, moderate their sufferings; shorten the time of their misery; call them soon unto Thee in heaven, that they may behold Thee face to face, and forever love Thee. Mary, Mother of Mercy, come to their aid with thy powerful intercession, and pray for us also who are still in danger of eternal damnation.
Say one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and the Prayer to Our Suffering Savior for the Holy Souls in Purgatory .

Meditations on the Stations of the Cross for Holy Souls

1st Station – Jesus is condemned to death
We adore you o Christ and we praise you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world
Meditation –
Let us go back to the Garden of Olives, where Jesus saw the sins of the world. He also saw luke warm souls, who would know what he had done for them, and still would turn their back on his love. This caused him the greatest pain, this caused the agony. The creator still longed to die for these people to give them every chance. His love is not conditional like ours. Do we only love those who love us?
His apostles ran away, and Judas betrayed him with a kiss. Only one apostle was going to follow Him to calvary. The guards savagely took our Lord, and beat him. They took him to the Chief Priest’s House where they lied and accused him, they spat at him, and beat him savagely. He then saw Peter, the one who earlier that night, had said he would die for him, now he denied Jesus three times. Do I make promises like Peter? He was savagely scourged at the pillar until he had lost so much blood he could have died there and then. All the while he remained obediently quiet, offering everything to the Father for our sins. Now they were going to have fun with him, so they dressed him up like a king in mockery, they danced around Him, slapping Him and spitting at Him. They forced a crown of thorns into His head, and it probably went through his head and eyebrows. Then the crowd, who only a week before had worshipped Him on Palm Sunday, now shouted “crucify him” at the innocent lamb, their creator who never did anything to anyone, but show love and give life.
Holy Souls Prayer –
Eternal Father, I offer you the most precious blood of your divine son Jesus, in union with all the masses said throughout the world today, for the holy souls in Purgatory, sinners everywhere, sinners within the Universal Church, within my own home, and my own family. Amen.

2nd Station – Jesus is given his cross
We adore you o Christ and we praise you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world
Meditation –
Here we see our Lord given his heavy cross. He embraces the cross with love. He trusts in the Father. He is not strong enough to carry a piece of paper, he has lost so much of His precious blood, never mind carry a cross up a hill, but out of holy obedience he tries. His heart longs to free us. We ask ourselves here are we willing to embrace our crosses. All we need do is to try with a willing heart, and God will give us the necessary graces to do the rest. Can we trust God as the God of love and mercy like Jesus?
Holy Souls Prayer –
Eternal Father, I offer you the most precious blood of your divine son Jesus, in union with all the masses said throughout the world today, for the holy souls in Purgatory, sinners everywhere, sinners within the Universal Church, within my own home, and my own family. Amen.

3rd Station – Jesus falls for the first time
We adore you o Christ and we praise you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world
Meditation –
Our dear Lord falls for the first time. The weight of the cross is so heavy it pushes him to the ground. He falls on the stony path, and probably his knees and elbows are ripped open, and then the heavy cross lands on top of him. He gets back up again however to keep trying, to keep persevering. We too must just keep trying for love of Jesus. Even the smallest little offerings are great when done for love of Jesus. We are sinners, and we will fall but we have to try and keep going. Go to confession regularly and examine our conscience at night. Dear Lord, please give us the grace to persevere with love, to keep going when the cross gets heavy.
Holy Souls Prayer –
Eternal Father, I offer you the most precious blood of your divine son Jesus, in union with all the masses said throughout the world today, for the holy souls in Purgatory, sinners everywhere, sinners within the Universal Church, within my own home, and my own family. Amen.

4th Station – Jesus meets his mother
We adore you o Christ and we praise you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world
Meditation –
Here we see the Immaculate Heart of Mary meet the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Can you imagine the scene? Mary as co- redeemer is carrying her own HEAVY cross up Calvary after her son. Her pain is so great, a sword is piercing her heart watching her son suffer so much, surrounded by so much evil and hatred, yet she accepts this and continues to trust in God’s goodness. 33 years later and she continues to say YES to God. Do we lose trust in God at the slightest wobble? Can we trust like Mary when the cross is heavy and human instincts tell us to avoid the cross? Mary, please help me to trust in God’s goodness when I am carrying my own cross. Help me to learn from your obedience to God’s Holy Will, and to be meek and humble as you are.
Holy Souls Prayer –
Eternal Father, I offer you the most precious blood of your divine son Jesus, in union with all the masses said throughout the world today, for the holy souls in Purgatory, sinners everywhere, sinners within the Universal Church, within my own home, and my own family. Amen.

5th Station – Simon helps Jesus carry his cross
We adore you o Christ and we praise you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world
Meditation –
Simon didn’t want to help Jesus when he was asked to help carry his cross. Perhaps he was afraid what people would think? Am I afraid to follow Jesus as I am worried about what people think? Would the crowd think he was a criminal carrying his cross? Does this remind me of myself? Am I too caught up in my own fears, worries, etc., to think of helping others? Dear Lord, open my ears and eyes to the crying needs of those around me such as my neighbour, the poor suffering souls in purgatory with nobody to help them, and the souls that go to Hell each and every hour.
Holy Souls Prayer –
Eternal Father, I offer you the most precious blood of your divine son Jesus, in union with all the masses said throughout the world today, for the holy souls in Purgatory, sinners everywhere, sinners within the Universal Church, within my own home, and my own family. Amen.

6th Station – Veronica wipes the face of Jesus
We adore you o Christ and we praise you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world
Meditation –
St Veronica had much to risk. The crowd were roaring abuse at Jesus, and by helping a condemned man what would they think of her? What would her neighbours say? Would the soldiers throw her in prison? Veronica did not care, she was too full of love, and she wanted to help ease the Lord’s pain. Are we also too afraid of the consequences to help the Lord? Veronica wiped his face but he was still going to die, but he was so grateful he left the imprint of his face in the shroud. This shows us how the smallest offerings, made as acts of love throughout the day, can help console our Lord.
Holy Souls Prayer –
Eternal Father, I offer you the most precious blood of your divine son Jesus, in union with all the masses said throughout the world today, for the holy souls in Purgatory, sinners everywhere, sinners within the Universal Church, within my own home, and my own family. Amen.

7th Station – Our Lord Jesus falls the 2nd time
We adore you o Christ and we praise you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world
Meditation –
Our Lord Jesus falls again. The just man/woman it is said falls at least 7 times a day. We are weak and sinners, but we must TRY to keep getting back up like the Lord. Think of him on the ground in agony. What had he to get back up for? Nobody was going to think him great and brave, and there was no cash prize or earthly reward…..just more and more suffering lay ahead. It was LOVE that made him get back up again. Love for you. If he had an ounce of self love he would have stopped the passion there and then, but our sins were so great it was necessary for him to continue to carry out the will of His Father, and he embraced his cross once more and carried on, even though he physically wasn’t able.
Holy Souls Prayer –
Eternal Father, I offer you the most precious blood of your divine son Jesus, in union with all the masses said throughout the world today, for the holy souls in Purgatory, sinners everywhere, sinners within the Universal Church, within my own home, and my own family. Amen.

8th Station – Jesus meets the holy women of Jerusalem
We adore you o Christ and we praise you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world
Meditation –
The Holy women weep when they see our Lord suffer so much. He somehow musters up enough strength to go over to them and tells them not to weep for him, but for themselves and their children. Our Lord is telling us here the great need for prayers and sacrifices, as he sees the troubled road ahead for people. Is there anyone in our family that we should weep for? He sees today’s world and the amount of suffering each person and family goes through. He gives us the solution. We should also ask ourselves here, when we are going through a difficult day, do we consider others as he does in this station, or is the focus just turned in on ourselves.
Holy Souls Prayer –
Eternal Father, I offer you the most precious blood of your divine son Jesus, in union with all the masses said throughout the world today, for the holy souls in Purgatory, sinners everywhere, sinners within the Universal Church, within my own home, and my own family. Amen.

9th Station – Jesus falls for the third time
We adore you o Christ and we praise you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world
Meditation –
Our Lord falls for the third and final time. Imagine him hit the ground again and the cross landing on top of him. The soldiers are angry now as he is wasting their time, so they whip him harder and get aggressive with him. He somehow stumbles to His feet, and gets up to continue suffering…..love again drives him forward. We think here of the members of our family’s and friends who have fallen and are away from God. We ask you dear Lord to bring them back to you.
Holy Souls Prayer –
Eternal Father, I offer you the most precious blood of your divine son Jesus, in union with all the masses said throughout the world today, for the holy souls in Purgatory, sinners everywhere, sinners within the Universal Church, within my own home, and my own family. Amen.

10th Station – Jesus is stripped of his garments
We adore you o Christ and we praise you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world
Meditation –
Our Lord is stripped naked of his garments. Can you imagine the clothes been ripped off him after being stuck to his blood stained body…..like one giant plaster being ripped off. This must be one of the most humiliating things a person can go through – to be stripped of their dignity and stand their helpless and naked in front of other people. They laugh at him…..He is their creator…..He gave them life…..He did nothing and is innocent…….yet He permits this to show us the way to salvation. He shows us that when people mock us we can offer this up, and turn it into something powerful and good. He loves us so much that he allows this to happen to him. He wants to show us His love and what is important to join Him in Eternal Paradise.
Holy Souls Prayer –
Eternal Father, I offer you the most precious blood of your divine son Jesus, in union with all the masses said throughout the world today, for the holy souls in Purgatory, sinners everywhere, sinners within the Universal Church, within my own home, and my own family. Amen.

11th Station – Jesus is nailed to the cross
We adore you o Christ and we praise you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world
Meditation –
Our Lord Jesus is now nailed to the cross. They grab him and throw him on the cross, and proceed to put nails through his hands and feet. Can you imagine the agony? He shouts out “Forgive them father. They know not what they do”. What would you shout if a nail was being hammered through your feet? How forgiving are we of those who offend us in minor ways? Do we ever try and put ourselves in the other person’s shoes? Our Lord here shows us that we must forgive, and love all those who in any way offend us, because they really do not know what they do. We are all weak.
Holy Souls Prayer –
Eternal Father, I offer you the most precious blood of your divine son Jesus, in union with all the masses said throughout the world today, for the holy souls in Purgatory, sinners everywhere, sinners within the Universal Church, within my own home, and my own family. Amen.

12th Station – Jesus dies on the cross
We adore you o Christ and we praise you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world
Meditation –
Jesus came down to this earth to die for us, and now he hangs from the cross for 3 hours in the most intense pain possible. He is thirsting for souls. He is thirsting for your faith. They continue to mock him and make fun of the innocent lamb, their creator. He slowly suffocates in the immense mid day heat. How can he go through this pain for me when I hardly ever think of him, or show him any love? When he dies blood and water gush forth from his heart. Blood representing the new life, the sacraments that come through the church, which give us LIFE. They give us the graces needed to get through this life, and strength in the fight against evil. The water represents the sacraments of confession and baptism, which clean and wash away our sins. God is so merciful that the greatest sin disappears like a piece of straw into a great furnace, when we approach the Lord with a contrite heart.
Holy Souls Prayer –
Eternal Father, I offer you the most precious blood of your divine son Jesus, in union with all the masses said throughout the world today, for the holy souls in Purgatory, sinners everywhere, sinners within the Universal Church, within my own home, and my own family. Amen.

13th Station – Jesus is laid in his Mother’s Arms
We adore you o Christ and we praise you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world
Meditation –
Jesus is now dead but his Mother’s pain continues. Can you just imagine her seeing her beloved son being taken down from the cross, and the nails being taken out? Can you imagine witnessing the crown of thorns being pulled out of his head? Mary then holds her son in her arms, and cleans him lovingly. Think of Michaelanglo’s Pieta. Mary, hold us too in your arms and protect us and our families. Help us to follow your example more dearly and to learn from you.
Holy Souls Prayer –
Eternal Father, I offer you the most precious blood of your divine son Jesus, in union with all the masses said throughout the world today, for the holy souls in Purgatory, sinners everywhere, sinners within the Universal Church, within my own home, and my own family. Amen.

14th Station – Jesus is laid in the tomb
We adore you o Christ and we praise you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world
Meditation –
Our Lord is now laid to rest in the tomb. Can we sense Mary’s pain? We think of the resurrection which is coming now and the great light and glory which we can almost see beginning to light up the tomb. How Jesus had to suffer though to reach his glory. We too must remember that we must take the narrow road of the cross in life to also reach the light. No cross, no crown. No Good Friday, No Easter Sunday. Dear Lord, please help us to remember this when the times are tough. Our focus should not be on the temporary difficulties or pleasures of this life, which always disappear, but the eternal reward which awaits good and faithful servants.
Holy Souls Prayer –
Eternal Father, I offer you the most precious blood of your divine son Jesus, in union with all the masses said throughout the world today, for the holy souls in Purgatory, sinners everywhere, sinners within the Universal Church, within my own home, and my own family. Amen. Download the File

Express Novena of Mother Teresa of Calcuta

The 'Memorare' is a specific prayer, composed by St Bernard, which goes as follows:

"Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided.

Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful.

O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me."

So for the Express Novena you simply repeat the prayer nine times in a row, mentioning your intention before each repetition of the prayer. Also request the help of holy souls of purgatory, read here testimonies

Offer the holy souls of purgatory any one or more of these prayers for your intentions. You can also offer them a mass. Spread the devotion to the Holy Souls of Purgatory as they need our prayers to relieve their pain and suffering.

The Prayer of St. Gertrude

Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.

Prayer for the Most Neglected Souls

Jesus, for the sake of the agony that You endured during Your fear of death in the Garden of Gethsemane, at the Scourging and Crowning, on the way to Mt. Calvary, at Your Crucifixion and at Your Death, have mercy on the souls in Purgatory and especially on those who are completely forgotten! Deliver them from their bitter pains, call them to You and embrace them in Your Arms in Heaven!

Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary

Lord, grant them eternal rest. Amen.

O Lord, Jesus Christ, through the Sacred Blood that You shed during Your fear of death in the Garden of Gethsemane, please deliver the souls of Your faithful from the sufferings of the fires of Purgatory, in particular those who are most neglected, and lead them to their place in Your Splendor to glorify and praise You in eternity.

Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary

O Lord, Jesus Christ, through the Sacred Blood that You shed during Your merciless flogging, please deliver all the souls of the faithful, in particular those who are closest to their liberation, and lead them to seeing You so that they may glorify and praise You in eternity.

Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary

O Lord, Jesus Christ, through the Sacred Blood that You shed during Your painful Crowning, please deliver all souls of the Christian faithful from the dungeon of Purgatory, in particular those who would have to suffer there very much longer, and lead them into the Blessed Community of the Chosen, so that they may glorify and praise You in eternity.

Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary

O Lord, Jesus Christ, through the Sacred Blood that You shed during Your gruesome Crucifixion, please deliver all the souls of the departed, in particular those of my father, my mother, my brothers and sisters, my relatives, my benefactors, and lead them to eternal joys, so that they may glorify and praise You in eternity.

Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary

O Lord, Jesus Christ, through the Sacred Blood that poured from Your Blessed Side, please deliver all Poor Souls from Purgatory, in particular those who during their lives especially served Your Blessed Virgin Mother, and lead them to Your Eternal Glory, so that they may glorify and praise You in eternity.

Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary

Rosary for the Poor Souls in Purgatory

Here we pray the Sorrowful Mysteries. Before each decade, we pray what concerns the particular mystery, and instead of ending the decades with Glory Be..., we pray:
Lord, grant them eternal rest and let perpetual light shine upon them!

Begin the Rosary normally, and then before the first decade is prayed, but after the 1st Sorrowful Mystery is stated, pray:
Lord, Jesus Christ, through Your bloody sweat of fear that You shed on the Mount of Olives, we ask You to have mercy on the Poor Souls in Purgatory. Deliver them from their fear and pain and console them with the cup of heavenly comfort!

Before the second decade is prayed, but after the 2nd Sorrowful Mystery is stated, pray:
Lord Jesus Christ, through Your painful Scourging which You tolerated so patiently for us sinners, we ask You to have mercy on the Poor Souls in Purgatory. Retract from them the pain of Your anger and give them eternal rest!

Before the third decade is prayed, but after the 3rd Sorrowful Mystery is stated, pray:
Lord Jesus Christ, through Your painful Crowning which You suffered so patiently for us sinners, we ask You to have mercy on the Poor Souls in Purgatory, and give them the crown of eternal delight!

Before the fourth decade is prayed, but after the 4th Sorrowful Mystery is stated, pray:
Lord Jesus Christ, through Your painful Carrying of the Cross, which You suffered so patiently for us sinners, we ask You to have mercy on the Poor Souls in Purgatory. Remove from them the heavy burden of suffering and lead them into eternal peace!

Before the fifth decade is prayed, but after the 5th Sorrowful Mystery is stated, pray:
Lord Jesus Christ, through Your painful Crucifixion, which You suffered so patiently for us sinners, we ask You to have mercy on the Poor Souls in Purgatory. Turn Your Holy Face toward them and let them today be in Paradise with You!

After praying the last decade, we pray:
Lord Jesus Christ, through Your five Holy Wounds and through all of Your Sacred Blood that You shed, we ask You to have mercy on the Poor Souls in Purgatory, and in particular for our parents, relatives, spiritual guides, and benefactors. Heal their painful wounds and let them enjoy and participate fully in Your Salvation. Amen.

Lord's Prayer for the Poor Souls, as given to St. Matilda

OUR FATHER WHO ART IN HEAVEN: We most humbly beseech You--good, merciful and eternal Father--forgive the Poor Souls who You Yourself have taken as Your children, who did not love You and who pushed You away from them and neglected to give You sufficient honor. As reparation and penance I offer You all the love and good deeds of Your most beloved Son, Jesus Christ, Our Lord.

HALLOWED BE THY NAME: I most humbly beseech You--good, merciful and eternal Father--forgive the Poor Souls who did not give glory to Your Name, who often spoke unworthily or thoughtlessly. As reparation and penance I offer You all the sermons with which Your most beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, honored Your Name while here on earth.

THY KINGDOM COME: We beseech You most humbly--good eternal and merciful Father--forgive the Poor Souls who did not attend to Your kingdome with a burning love and a yearning wish but who often enriched themselves with earthly goods. As reparation and penance, I offer You the great offering that Your most beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, made so that all can be taken into Your kingdom.

THY WILL BE DONE, ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN: We beseech You most humbly--good, eternal and merciful Father--forgive the Poor Souls who did not serve Your Will but often followed their own will and who thereby did not do Your Will. As reparation and penance, we offer You the Holy and Divine Heart of Your Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and its total will service.

GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD AND FORGIVE US OUR TRESPASSES AS WE FORGIVE THOSE WHO TRESPASS AGAINST US: We beseech You most humbly--good, eternal and merciful Father--forgive the Poor Souls who offered no resistance to big temptations but who fell to the urgings of evil and into ruin. As reparation and penance we offer You the obedience, the tiring work, all the bitter sufferings and the death of Your most beloved Son, Jesus Christ Our Lord.

AND DELIVER US FROM EVIL: We most humbly beseech You--good, eternal and merciful Father--forgive the Poor Souls and lead them as well as our souls, through the merits of Your most beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, into the kingdom of Your Holiness, which You Yourself are. Amen.

Amen.

Those whose release is most remote,

The mighty, who are now powerless,
The once spiritually blind, who now see their folly,
The frivolous, who spent their time in idleness,
The poor, who did not seek the treasures of heaven,T

The insolent, who neglected to perform good works,
Those of little faith, who neglected the frequent reception of the Sacraments,
The habitual sinners, who owe their salvation to a miracle of grace,
Parents who failed to watch over their children,
Superiors who were not solicitous for the salvation of those entrusted to them,
Those who strove for worldly riches and pleasures,
The worldly-minded, who failed to use their wealth and talents in the service of God,
Those who witnessed the death of others, but would not think of their own*
Those who did not provide for the life hereafter,
Those whose sentence is severe because of the great things entrusted to them,
The popes, kings and rulers,
The bishops and their counselors,
My teachers and spiritual advisers,
The deceased priests of this diocese,
The priests and religious of the Catholic Church,
The defenders of the holy faith,

Those who died of heart attacks,
Those who suffered and died of cancer,
Those who died suddenly in accidents,
Those who died without the last rites of the Church,
Those who shall die within the next twenty-four hours,
My own poor soul when I shall have to appear before Thy judgement seat.

Pray for the Suffering Souls in Purgatory

PRAYER

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them: Forevermore with Thy Saints, because Thou art gracious.

P. The Lord be with you.
S. And with thy spirit.

May the prayer of Thy suppliant people, we beseech Thee, O Lord, benefit the souls of Thy departed servants and handmaids: that Thou mayest both deliver them from all their sins, and make them to be partakers of Thy redemption. Amen. Eternal rest grant to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. Amen. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

(Recommend yourself to the Souls in Purgatory and mention your intentions here)

Amen.

Invocations

Eternal Father I offer you the most Precious Blood of Jesus with all the Masses being said this day all over the world for the Souls in Purgatory

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace.

May the Divine assistance remain always with us, and may the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Eternal Father, by virtue of your generosity and love, I ask that you accept all my actions and that you multiply their value in favour of every soul in Purgatory. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Jesus and Mary, I love You, save souls.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in Thee.

Jesus, Mary, Joseph, have mercy on the Poor Souls

Jesus help me to help you save souls

Prayer on passing a cemetary:

May God and Mary bless you all.
You were once as we are now, and we will be, one day , like you.
You pray with us and we pray with you.
May Mary pray with us both.
And may He who suffered His Passion for you, grant you everlasting rest.

Intercession Prayer

Holy Souls in Purgatory, I have prayed for you and I will continue to pray for you, and to encourage others to pray for you, in return please obtain for me through your intercession, the following favours (state your petitions). I also ask the whole court of heaven to grant me these favours also. Dear saints in heaven please pray for the relief of the Holy Souls in Purgatory especially (NAME HERE).

Holy Water

Holy water is to remind us of the sacred blood of Christ, by which we are cleansed from our sins and when we bless ourselves, remember the Holy Souls i.e. they can benefit greatly by sprinkling Holy Water with the sign of the cross and recite the prayer:

"By this Holy Water and by thy precious blood, O Lord wash away the sins of all my dear departed brothers and sisters in Purgatory, in the Name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen"
